Last night I was talking with one of my roommates about music we liked. She went off talking about how she grew up on the beatles and how amazing they were. I mentioned to her that I thought the beatles were overrated and that , to me, they’re musically uninteresting outside of two or three songs. I know I’m not the only person who thinks that. Because we were sharing, I said to her, if we want to talk about older music that’s amazing, we should talk about the four tops and the temptations.

she said, with complete authority and all seriousness, ” well you only like them because they’re black”

I probably never have gotten so serious with a friend so quickly. Excuse me? I said. You better be kidding right now because if not we’re going to have a serious problem. It is not my fault that some of the best aspects of AMERICAN culture have been contributed by black people and it would be a shame that you’re going to write me and by extention black culture off like that.

She had no response.

I legitimately get that all the time, ” you only like this cause it’s black/only like them because they’re black, etc” funny because I don’t hear anyone going to this specific person ” you only like the beatles because they’re white”  but only ” you only like the beatles because it’s good music”

cool. do you see what you just did there? do you understand what you’re implying? You said a whole fucking lot with out saying much.

Man, fuck you. seriously. I don’t have enough words to tell you how absolutely ignorant and wrong you are, and how completely intolerant i am to any forms of that conversation.
